How Anxiety and Insomnia are Related

Have you ever heard the expression “what you resist persists”? Well it is very appropriate when it comes to getting a anxiety and insomniagood night sleep or not. I’ll explain shortly.  But my research findings are that anxiety and insomnia go hand in hand, and all the concentration in the world on getting to sleepmay be fruitless. But I am sure you know that already.

I had come to find out that there were really only two things that were influencing people’s ability to have a good night sleep. These are physical pain and worry (stress). And when you have difficulty getting to sleep because of worry and anxiety, it also creates bodily discomfort and pain, even if you are not injured in any way.

When we toss & turn and focus our mind to relax and get to sleep, or focus on those things that we are worried about, we are in fact giving all of our attention to the issue that is keeping us awake in the first place. The number one thing to remember is if you try to force yourself to sleep, you probably would not  have a chance. See what is happening is that you are resisting your minds thoughts and creating more anxiety and insomnia.

Breathing patterns change when we are stressed and over tired. Without knowing it, your breathing becomes shallow and rapid. That right there will cause your mind and body to tense up and cause greater difficulty in falling asleep. Not enough oxygen is getting to the brain and you become anxious.

I have a great set of breathing exercises for you, some of which you can do through the day when needed.  Read my article Anxiety Self Help which will give you some natural sleep remedies and after applying these breathing techniques night after night, you should be able to overide your  insomnia problems, most of the time. But you have to practice, keep it up until it becomes a new habit.

Going back to the beginning, if you focus on breathing properly, then your mind is not focusing on anything else, right? Then your mind will start to relax and you can fall into a good night’s sleep. If you do happen to wake up in the middle of the night, just re-focus on your breathing.

You can also try these natural sleep remedies. Before you go to bed, have a “caffeine free” green tea. I usually have two, but I really like green tea. Then tell yourself that getting to sleep WILL happen in its own time. Get yourself prepared for the possibility that you may fall asleep quickly or it may take a little time.

Once in bed and eyes closed, focus through your mind’s eye. That is the spot on your forehead between your eyes. You can imagine beautiful places, relaxing scenery. Or if you can play some relaxing music or sounds of the ocean surf it works well towards acquiring anxiety and insomnia relief.
