Social phobia covers many scenarios but one thing is common. FEAR and plenty of it! Many agree that any social phobia treatment must begin with the understanding of exactly what is and what causes this condition.

What most people would consider to be simple social contact and interaction is petrifying to those of you who suffer from social phobia.

Symptoms Include: nervous sweating, uncontrollable shaking, nausea to name a few.

You may have been told you have an anxiety disorder. Well, that is partly true. Anxiety is the problem here, and my research says that it is the root cause. Accepting would seem to be   paramount to a helpful social phobia treatment. And if my research is correct, then a disorder or illness it is not. It is social anxiety!

The first step in your social phobia treatment is not to resist the overwhelming fear, the shaking etc. What I was taught when I suffered from severe anxiety was to begin by taking the following steps.

  • When out in a social environment that freaks you out, do not fight the sensations. Allow them and even encourage them. That allows you to no longer feel the pressure of having to try and stop them. Sounds odd, I know, and it takes some work but it is necessary to get started.
  • Allow yourself to be free of the worry of what others may think of you because you may outwardly look scared out of your mind.

NOTE: For any social phobia treatment to work, such as the above beginning steps, you need to prepare yourself ahead of time. What I mean by prepare is this. Before you head out to whatever perceived terrifying situation you are going to be in, allow yourself to be unafraid.

When a frightening anxious thought all of a sudden whacks you in the head and makes you feel almost paralyzed with fear, think of how you  WANT things to go. Think of how great it WILL feel to be there and be able to function with ease.

I have no doubt you do this already, but if you landed on my site, then I am guessing that as soon as you had those oh so pleasant thoughts, “wham”, back came those dreaded fearful thoughts. Any phobia treatment is a process.

It will take practise and there is more involved in your social phobia treatment than a few tried and proven suggestions, but I want you to see that you can be rid of this social life destroying nuisance and without medications.

What you resist persists! I say that in all my anxiety articles because it is so true. The harder you focus on what you don’t want, then that is how it will be.  If you are focusing fearfully on if you were to go to that party, school class or give that public speech, then you are already defeated. And in many cases, you may not even bother leaving the house.
